DIY Pencil Valentines: Heart of Gold

Today, we’re talking valentines! As Valentine’s Day quickly approaches, it’s time to start thinking about those classroom valentines. These pencil valentines are a super cute, non-candy, valentine treat that your kids and their classmates are sure to love!

I picked up these pencils in the Target Dollar Spot. Although they had valentine themed pencils, I opted for these bright, fun patterns — perfect for boys or girls.

I inserted one pencil into a 1″ x 8″ cello bag which can be purchased at Clear Bags. Then I added the fun gold heart topper.

To make the toppers:

  • Start with a 12″ x 12″ sheet of black cardstock.
  • Cut it into 4″ strips and scored the strips down the center (at 2″).
  • Cut the strips into 2″ x 4″ sections with the score down the middle.
  • Fold the scored cardstock pieces over the top of the cello bag and attach with a staple.

TIP: Use a small craft hammer to flatten the staple so there are no sharp edges to poke through the embellishments or to cut little fingers.

TIP: To make this project is essential that you have a paper cutter and scoring board. If you only do light crafting this combo paper cutter/scorer is inexpensive and will do the job perfectly! (We R Memory Keepers Trim and Score)

Now it’s time to decorate. I cut 1 3/4″ squares of Bazzill Dotted Swiss cardstock in colors that coordinated with my pencils and attached them to the toppers (covering the staple). Then I punched out gold hearts and attached them to the toppers with dimensional dots.

To finish off the toppers you can add a cute sentiment to the back. Simply use your word processing program and set up a table 6 x 4 with 1.75″ cells. Type your sentiment in the cells, print and cut.

For these valentines, I think the sentiment “You have a HEART of gold!” is perfect! If you’d like, you can download the PDF file with this sentiment. It has 24 sentiment squares with a place for your child to write their name. Just cut  it into 1.75″ squares and attach to the back of your toppers.

You & Me are Better Together Valentine

With Christmas over, it’s time to move onto Valentine’s Day! The adorable Big Bold Brew stamp set from Neat and Tangled makes a perfect valentine!

I stamped the little guy on white Copic X-Press Blending Cardstock with Memento Black ink and colored him in with Copics. I love the combination of Memento Ink and X-Press Blending Card for coloring with Copics — the Memento doesn’t smudge and the cardstock is awesome for blending.

After he was all colored, I cut him out with the coordinating dies and mounted him to a stitched rectangle which I backed with a slightly larger black rectangle to set it off from the patterned paper.

The sentiment and heart stamps are included in the Big Bold Brew set and are perfect for my Valentine themed card. I stamped the sentiment directly onto the white stitched rectangle and I stamped the hearts on Copic X-Press Card and colored them in with Copics before cutting them out with the matching die. I attached the hearts with mini glue dots which are just what you need for small embellishments like these hearts or sequins.

I am entering my card in Neat and Tangled: Little Tangles Challenge #76. Check it out and play along. If you don’t have any Neat & Tangled stamps, there is a free digi-stamp you can use when creating your entry.

Just Sayin…Love Ya!

Just Sayin’…
Today’s card is “Just Sayin’…Love Ya” with the Stampin’ Up Just Sayin’ stamp set and coordinating Word Bubble Framelit Dies.
I just love stamp sets that have coordinating dies. It makes cutting things out so effortless…especially when paired with the Big Shot Magnetic Platform to hold everything in place while cutting.
Tips:
  • Use the Magnetic Platform with your Big Shot and Framelit dies to hold everything in place. I didn’t think I needed the Magnetic Platform but once I got it…WOW. It really does stop the dies and paper from shifting and makes it soooo much easier!
  • Punch out the arrow with the What’s Up punch. Then cut it in half at an angle and place it so it appears to be piercing the word bubble…cutting it in half at an angle is the key.

Measurements and Cutting:

Card Base: (See Card Making Basics for a diagram)

  • Start with 8 1/2 x 11″ Whisper White cardstock
  • Cut in half  to make a 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 base
  • Score at 4 1/4 and fold in half
Layers:
  • Melon Mambo Mat (5 1/4″ x 4″)
  • Stacked With Love DSP (5″ x 3 3/4″)
