Colorful Card Backgrounds with Cardstock Scraps

Hey guys! Today I’m going to show you how to use some of your cardstock scraps to create colorful, striped backgrounds for your cards.

You might have noticed that many of my cards begin with the same basic layers.  A cardbase, a mat layer and a design layer.

Card Base:  A2 – 5 1/2″ x 4 1/4″     Mat Layer:  5 1/4″ x 4″     Design Layer: 5″ x 3 3/4″

Because I use the same size mat on so many of my cards, I like to keep a stash of pre-cut cardstock on hand so I can quickly choose one that coordinates with the colors in my card.

When I cut the cardstock for my mat layers, I end up with lots of 1/2″ strips of colorful cardstock. And because I can’t stand to waste — I save them in a plastic container and use them to make colorful, striped backgrounds for my cards.

To make the striped background, I start with one of the pre-cut mats and use a tape runner to apply adhesive around the edges and in vertical stripes spaced about 1/4″ apart. Then I start in the corner laying strips of cardstock onto the adhesive. I place the strips as close together as possible, overlapping the edge of the mat to be trimmed later.

When the entire piece of cardstock is covered with the strips, I flip it over and trim off the excess. Now I have a pretty striped background to use on my card.

To make this card, I trimmed the striped background to 5″ x 3 3/4″ and attached it to a yellow mat and attached that to an A2 card base. Then I stamped the smile sentiment from My Favorite Things All Occasion Sentiments on a 1″ piece of white cardstock and added a pink heart which I cut with My Favorite Things Stitched Heart Die-namic.
